Attempted a question on reported speech but I am not sure if I should change the verb 'did' to 'had done'. If I should use 'had done' instead of leave 'did' as it is, please help me to understand why. Both sound okay to me, although I'm tempted to change did to 'had done' because reported speech requires change in tenses. Oftentimes, I'm so confused as to when I should change the tense and when I should not.

Question: “Cindy sang well last night but not as well as I did,” said Lily.

My answer: Lily said (this is fixed at the beginning of the sentence) that Cindy had sang well the previous night but not as well as she (did / had done).

Thank you for teaching me! :-D
