I often read sentence like " I hope you have a good trip" and "I wish you have a good trip"; or " I hope you have a good day" or "I wish you have a good day", and lots of examples like that..

What's the difference between "I hope..." and "I wish..."; which is better?

Thank you!

Good afternoon.

(1) First, neither verb is "better."

(a) They are both good and different.

(2) "Hope" = something is possible.

(a) I hope (that) you have a good trip.

(i) If you have a good trip, I will be very happy.

(3) "Wish" = something that is not true.

(i) I wish (that) I was/ were handsome.

(a) But I am ugly, and nothing can change that. I can only wish (dream) that I was/were handsome.

(ii) You may NOT say:

I wish that you have a nice trip.

BUT!!!!

You may say:

I wish you a nice trip.

I wish you a happy birthday.

I wish you good luck.

Sentences like those three are exceptions to the rule.

P.S. But you may NOT say:

I hope you a nice trip.

I hope you a happy birthday.

I hope you good luck.

Thank you for your great question. I hope that you have a great day. I
wish you great success in English.
