Hello, is the word "population" [STRIKE]is[/STRIKE] countable? [STRIKE]or non[/STRIKE]

It can be either; e.g.,

The population of salmon in the lake was under 10,000.

The populations of several countries were analyzed in the study.

What's the context? If you're talking in general, it is usually uncountable, but each country, city,etc, has its own population, so it can be plural.
