My grammar book says '"would' sometimes means 'wish to or would like to'", showing this sentence,

I would (wish to, would like to) ask you to reconsider your decision.

Do you agree with this?

Thank you so much as usual and have a good day.

Thank you so much and I am a little bit confused now that then why people use 'would' for the meaning of 'would like to' if they mean the same? Is there a reason? Thank you so much as usual and have a good day.
