Dear teachers,
Would you tell me your opinion about the interpretations of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?
“I wouldn’t take a penny from him. I’d rather starve.”
“But it’s monstrous that he should leave you in the lurch like this.” (W. S. Maugham, “Of Human Bondage”)
Of course tongues wagged when Daphne came home with a baby in her arms. .. But Wally O’Brien had left Kalgoorlie, and whatever scandal mongering there was, did not affect the usual kindly attitude of goldfields folk to a girl who had been “left in the lurch by some blackguard,” as they put it. (K. S. Prichard, “Winged Seeds”)
“I’ve left you your own ways and given you everything you’ve wanted! And all you can do is take advantage of me good nature: leave me in the lurch when I need a bit of looking after…(K. S. Prichard, “Winged Seeds”)
leave somebody in the lurch = abandon or desert someone at a critical moment, abandon or desert someone in times of need, leave someone to the mercy of fate
