The real downside of all this advance consumerism? Family stress and general conflict, you betcha. According to a recent Time story, 1 in 5 high-school students say they desperately need a new smartphone or laptop for the new school year. 0 in 5 parents are in agreement.

My interpretation is: Parents have not agreed yet with what students are asking for. In other words, parents disagree. Is this correct explanation, please?

Yes. Not a single parent agrees that their child desperately needs a new smartphone or laptop for the new school year. It's an amusing way of saying it.

I would be counted among those parents, had The Globe and Mail interviewed me. My daughter, who turns 9 next month, is starting to campaign in order to get a cell phone (she didn't mention "smartphones", though) as a birthday present. :shock: So far, the answer has been clear from all sides (parents, grandparents, aunts&uncles): :down:
