[Grammar] Tom walked with his dog to the place he usually sleeps

Hello.

Are the following sentences grammatically correct?

"Tom walked with his dog to the place he usually sleeps. He dug a hole in the ground and took out a coffer. Then, Tom opened the coffer and took out a candle and a black and white photo of a young merchant sailor. He light the candle and close his eyes."

Aside from the somewhat unusual situation being described, the only error is that you have used the past simple for every verb except the last two. The word "coffer" is not very common, especially in the singular - we talk about "coffers" when referring to (physical and hypothetical) vessels that hold money.

It's usually called a "pirate's chest" when it's a box full of gold and other treasure. Your use of box suffices, in my opinion. The simple past of "to light" (in the context of a candle) is "lit".
