e.g. "Thousands of audience pay tribute to the performance."

I'm afraid not, *^^* (how do you pronounce that?:-?)

You could say 'Thousands of audiences. . .' if they were at thousands of concerts, or 'An audience of thousands. . .' if you're referring to one concert.
