Police climbed under the SUV and retrieved the VIN from the bottom of its engine block.

The above line is excerpted from a CNN report on recent NYC bomb scare.

My question is about the use of 'climb'. Do people say 'climb under', while my traditional understanding is that the act is always related to upward movement? Thank you.
