Irregular verb 'became'

I am having a problem identifying the type of verb tense 'became' falls under.

Sentence: I became aware of the fact that I was surrounded by people of my own nationality.

At first I thought it was Past Simple but when I started to look into it further I got confused because it is an irregular verb. I need to be able to explain this to my students as they are learning the different tenses but do not understand how and when to use the word.

At first I thought it was Past Simple It is simple past tense. but when I started to look into it further I got confused because it is an irregular verb. Yes, but irregular verbs also have a simple past tense.

I need to be able to explain this to my students as they are learning the different tenses but do not understand how and when to use the word.
