Hello,

How can you fill in the blank? Which alternative is correct? Why?

Some people are nearsighted; ............ people are farsighted.

a. other
b. others

Welcome to the forum, moshen. You say you are a teacher, so it's not homework (which we don't do).

First tell us which alternative sounds better to you when you read them aloud.

Matthew Wai, please allow the original poster to provide an answer before giving one yourself.

The OP wants an answer but we should allow him to provide an answer, it is weird.

We don't hand out answers on a silver platter. We need people to TRY to do the work themselves, and explain why they can't decide between options.

Absolutely no learning takes place when you give an answer.

If you don't like the way the forum operates, Matthew, you could always go away.

Hello everybody.
Actually I feel a doubt about an answer in a textbook on grammar.
I do not exactly know that this can be an error or I am not aware of the rule that is being used.

The blank seems to be answered by an adjective, other, (and not the pronoun others) as it is followed by the noun people.

But the book says "others" is the correct answer. I checked out the answer key

I agree. "Others" would work if the word "people" is deleted from the second clause. "Some people are...; others are...".
