Could you tell me the difference between:

"He admitted his guilt" and
"He admitted to his guilt."
Is there anything difference between the two. To me, they are both the same. They both mean "He confessed that he was guilty. Then, if they are the same, can I use the first sentence instead of the "second one". Many thanks in advance.
