When you speak about obtaining something in the present or past tense.

Hi,

Example of the sentences are..." The technique for obtaining data for the study are obtained from the ..." and " A quantitative research approach is used to examine therelationship among the variables." Is this correct?

Or should I used were obtained and was used???

Thanks.

The second is fine. The first should be singular, and the past makes more sense to me.

Why can't I use was used???
I don't really understand when you comment on the first sentence. Is it ...is obtained??? Why I can't I use was obtained, instead of is obtained???

I am confused when should I used was/were + past tense and is/are + past tense???

Pls Advise me!!!

You are confusing past tense and the third form of the verb, which is used to make the passive.

The technique is obtained - you get it over and over again.
The technique was obtained - you got it once in the past. You don't continually obtain something.

Often in describing a study, the present tense is used to describe the approach.
