Can one use:
1-My generation growing up, the world was not in the state it is now.
instead of:
2-When my generation was growing up, the world was not in the state it is now.

Gratefully,
Navi.

No. It dosn't work. It suggests that the state of the world was somehow because of the growing up of that generation.

"Growing" is a present participle. In the second sentence is part of a past progressive verb. "Up" is an adverb.

That is the part of the sentence that doesn't work.
