Thought you were implying I'm/I was fat.

Which one is correct?

Both could be used, but if you're worried that the person is talking about your current weight, I would the present.

Logically, I agree with Tdol. However, you will hear "I thought you were implying I was fat" a lot when you think they're talking about your current weight. For some reason, the addition of the word "that" makes me more likely to use the present tense: "I thought you were implying that I'm fat".

What if you're not fat and they're just making a joke about you?

Would I then use I was fat instead of I am fat?
