What adjective do you use for a machine when it does not work? (What do you call it when it works well?)

The lamp does not work, I know I cannot call it not-healthy, but I don't know what to call it.

"Functional: is not uncommon. You could also use "working".

Can I use broken for any non-working object or it is only for some things that can be broken to pieces?
When my computer does not work or my shoes are old or ... can I call them broken?

Computers "crash"; shoes wear out. A computer can be broken if it had been dropped.

To be honest, I don't see a problem with "doesn't work" or "doesn't work properly".

Examples:
Can I ask you for a lift? My car doesn't work.
Will we play World of Warcraft tonight? I don't think so, my computer doesn't work.
Mum, I can't turn the light on in the bathroom. Probably, the light doesn't work.

I don't say the examples above are natural (I don't think so), but they're correct.

Not a teacher nor a native speaker.
