I would like to know what does the verb "to place demands on" mean?
Could anyone please say to me what does the phrase below mean?

Complex service compositions place demands on service design that need to be anticipated to avoid massive retro-fitting efforts.

It means "to make demands of [something/someone]".
You need to anticipate the demands made on design if you want to make a complex composition, unless you are willing to retro-fit everything. Complexity of the product places extra demands on design. "Design" here is the drawing-board phase of a project.
