You will note that we say "the internet" in most cases.

ems, did you intend to write 'internet' with a lower case 'i'? When used as a noun, 'Internet' should be capitalized. ;-)

Yes, I did intend to write it with a lower case "i". The capitalisation seems to depend where you are. If you look here, and read the "Usage examples", you will see that it is nowadays frequently uncapitalised outside North America. When it first existed and was a novelty, I probably did write "Internet" but it has been several years since I've done or seen that here. It was the same with the World Wide Web - now it's just "the web".

Just to prove the point, today was the internet's 30th birthday. Take a look at the first paragraph here: Internet celebrates its 30th birthday - Telegraph

The headline reads "Internet" but that is because it's the first word of the sentence.

Happy New Year, ems! (Or is it 'happy new year'?)

Apparently, India never received the memo regarding the lower case "i": http://www.firstpost.com/tech/happy-birthday-the-internet-is-30-years-old-now-575475.html

Vive la difference!
