I visited Buckingham Palace; it was very expensive. (We don't use an article "the" because Buckingham is the last name?)

Thank you,

Anna

We don't use an article because the name of the building is 'Buckingham Palace'.

The use of articles with buildings and places can get very confusing. Sometimes you just have to learn them. Here are some examples:

I went to Buckingham Palace.
I went to Windsor Castle.
I went to Sydney Opera House.
I went to Mount Everest.

I went to the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
I went to the Golden Gate Bridge.
I went to the Taj Mahal.
I went to the Great Pyramids.

In your second clause, I would write "the trip was very expensive". I assume that you were not trying to buy the palace.

I don't necessarily agree. I think "it" can refer to "the visit". It costs an awful lot of money to get into Buckingham Palace.

Sure. "It" is just a placeholder or trace. Another example is "I had a girlfriend who was into that. It was a real eye-opener." The "it" refers to the entire preceding experience or idea.

But I had no idea that visiting the palace cost so much.

Mike,

I didn't write these sentences. I took quizzes from this website, and these two sentences come from one quiz.

This answer isn't enough. Since other names use "the." (Confusing)

Well, I am glad you didn't have to pay to visit the palace. :-D

The other posts refer to "the palace" because it is a specific palace. That does not mean we use "the" when the palace is named, as in Buckingham Palace.

The important part of post #3 was: "The use of articles with buildings and places can get very confusing. Sometimes you just have to learn them". Please note that "The answer isn't enough" is rather impolite when people have gone to the effort of trying to help you.

If it is xxxxx Palace, don't use the.

Except of course when referring to The Crystal Palace, Hyde Park, London, built for the Great Exhibition of 1851. Just one of probably many exceptions to that rule.

It's been voted the worst value tourist attraction in the UK.

I think that award should go to its inhabitants!
