And I think it's 'walking downtown'.

P.S. 'Spelling', not 'spilling'.

Alabady: Nice work. Here are a few suggestions.

Last night my brother was walking in the downtown area, and he met my old colleague, whom I haven't seen for ages.

From which faculty (Are you referring to an institution? If so, in the U.S. we would use the terms, institution, college, school or university) have you graduated? And what is your major?

Alabady:

What's the use of posting the same stuff for the nth time after it has already been revised? Especially when you don't seem to consider some of the suggestions you've been offered...

***** NOT A TEACHER *****

Good afternoon.

(1) Yes, that little word "downtown" is very confusing.

(2) I think your sentence would sound more natural to many Americans if you wrote: Last night my brother was walking downtown when....

(i) Probably "in" is not "wrong," but I think most people would not use it.

(ii) But nobody would use "the." If you used "the," everybody would know that you were an English learner.

(3) There ARE times when you MUST use "in":

(a) I love to walk in downtown Paris.

(4) There ARE times when you MUST use "the":

(a) I love to walk in the downtown area.

It's great that you want to learn correct English. Good luck.

Hello TheParser.
Is it incorrect to use 'down town' or 'downtown' as a noun then?

Hello TheParser.
Is it incorrect to use 'down town' or 'downtown' as a noun then?

***** NOT A TEACHER *****

good afternoon, mmasny.

(1) As I understand it, "downtown" is, indeed, a noun: Downtown at night is a dangerous place.

(2) It is also used as an adjective: "I have read that downtown Paris does not allow skyscrapers."

(3) It is also used as an adverb. I think the word some grammar books use is adverbial objective.

(a) I drove downtown. The noun "downtown" is being used as an adverb to modify "drove." I could also say: "I drove to downtown," which would leave no doubt to its role as a noun.

(b) That's why I mentioned in my answer to the original poster that "Last night my brother walked IN downtown" is not "incorrect." I feel, however, it is not idiomatic for many Americans.

I hope that my comments are accurate. Perhaps other Americans will share their views with you -- and me. Have a nice day.
