Toast: Salut

In American movie named Primal Fear, a lawyer was meeting his client's place, and they decided to close the lawsuit. The client raised a glass of alochol and toasted, "Salut".I knew it is French, but did Americans do say salut when they made a toast? If no, what do most Americans say for alternative English word?Thank you!

It was probably "Salud" and that is Italian. That's what mafia gangsters say in the movies.

In French, "salut" means "hi".

We say many things, including some foreign words:

Cheers
Here's mud in your eye
Down the hatch
Sláinte [Irish]
Skoal (Skol) [Scandanavian]
Prost (Prosit) [German]
Over the teeth and through the gums, look out stomach here it comes
Bottoms up

My favorite Irish toast:

To those who love us, may they always love us.
To those who don't love us, may God turn their hearts.
If God can't turn their hearts, may He turn their ankles.
So we will always know them by their limping.

Also: May you be in heaven a half hour before the Devil knows you're dead.
