channel vs. canal

I don't understand the difference between a "channel" and a "canal".
I thought that the word channel can be used only in connection with TV but why do you say "The English Channel", then?
If it can be used in the meaning of an aerea of sea which separates sth. from sth., what is the difference between a channel and a canal?


E.g. "Amsterdam is a city full of channels/canals. ("Channels" is supposed to be incorrect here. Why? Is the word canal used only for fresh (not sea) water?)

A channel is a natural waterway - a canal is a man-made waterway.
