Dear native speakers,

Would anyone please tell me which item best fills each gap?

1) Sandy's mid-term grades were passing but hardly .............. of a great year: she had 3 C's and 2 D's.
a) cacophonous b) portentous c) presumptuous d) perfidious

2) Peter tried hard to keep his temper, but when Ralph used the ............... words, "You are not a man enough to fight with me," he instinctively came out swinging.
a) piquant b) esoteric c) improvident d) incendiary

My answers to these are: 1) d and 2) b
but I'm not sure about them. I would be grateful if you help me.
Thanks

Neither answer is correct, A dictionary, such as one of the many here will tell you why - and help you gain some new vocabulary. If you are still not sure after checking in a dictionary, come back with your problem.

One exclamation mark is sufficient. Did you look up the meaning of the words?

Hi there,

I checked the website but I couldn't find the answers to my questions!

OK, let's take question 1 as an example. You said that your choice is d) which would give the sentence:

"Sandy's mid-term grades were passing but hardly perfidious of a great year: she had 3 C's and 2 D's."

So: Sandy's exam results in the middle of the academic year were 3 C's and 2 D's. Now how well or badly do you think she is going to do in her exams at the end of the year, based on those grades? Will she get straight A's? Will she get C's and D's again? Whatever your opinion, do you think that those grades can be described as "deceitful and untrustworthy" (a definition of "perfidious")?
