"You're getting divorced after being just a shit marriage for several years.'' It's what was said on a TV show.

I'm curious when I talk about the duration of a past event, what am I supposed to say "being a s... marriage for (a number of )years" or "having been a s...marriage for..." as in the above given context?

I would say after being/having been in a s... marriage. Although the divorce is still underway, having been sounds OK as the marriage is through and it's just a question of paperwork now.
