Hi, everybody!!!!!!

I got one interesting task for you all and need your cooperation.

The attached is an English Test . It is one of the 4 tests of the Entrance Examinations for Graduate Schools in China. It's designed for CHINESE students who speak English as a 2nd language.

And the test has been taken on Jan 9th. And most students think it's too hard for non-native speakers.

So I'm posting this to see how do you native speakers think of it?? Do you find it hard or easy?? And how much can YOU native speakers score??

If you're interested, please take the test and post your answers and I'll publish the right answers a few days later.

Thank you all for your cooperation.

Necessary reminder:
1.Don't feel ashamed if you can't finish on time. Chinese tests are known for their unreasonableness.
2. The time limit is 60 MINUTES. Plz time while you take the test.
3.30 questions in total. 100 points
4. you can print it out and take the test on paper.
5.The time limit is to be strictly followed!! No negotiation.

Please join and take the test, Million thanks to all!!!

Bows,
Bird

The attached file updated AGAIN!!!

After a brief look I have noticed that there are a lot of faults. I'll get back to you when I have had more time to study it.

This is an understatement. If people can't finish, it would be for reasons other than you think. Also, we have automatic spell checkers for a while now, there is absolutely no excuse for having so many spelling errors in an "English Test".

Oops. Sorry, ignore ALL the spelling errors please. It's actually my fault.

This WORD version test paper is actually ripped off from the original test paper. Someone had it scanned and OCR-processed. Given the English level of the people who have worked on it , the spelling errors are kind of....tolerable.

A sad fact : Anything without spelling errors is NOT a Chinese thing. In this internet era, spelling errors is actually a fad.

I'm working on the spelling errors and will repost the test paper later.

Apologies for all the time I made you waste.

I just took the test - I did it in about half an hour, but I paid little attention, really.

The options for 18 and 19 aren't there.

I would say the test is hard, yes. Certainly, it shouldn't be given to students who are less than advanced in English. All but one question seems to be around the subject of business/economics. So, advanced business English learners would be the people this should be given to I would have thought.

I felt like many of the answers in the comprehension tests weren't actually in the text, and were only inferred. This would be okay if it wasn't for the fact that the texts are full of jargon, and about specialised topics.

I doubt I scored a high mark, and I doubt any second learners of English would either.

Thank you, Linguist. Can you post your answers here?

The reading materials, even by Chinese standard, are considered not so hard. It's the questions cracked us down. Many of the options were too subjective and needed a lot of inferences .

Plus, section I was confusing too. Why could there be only ONE suitable word/phrase for each blank?? Totally goes against creativity.

But maybe that's just me. Whining of a loser.

Hi, everybody. I've reposted the test paper. Sorry for all the trouble caused. I should have double-checked it. And now I've done my best to get rid of the spelling errors. There're still punctuation errors. Not my fault. My Windows word would not show some punctuations correctly.

What I most concern about is, do native speakers find it hard too?

Many of my fellow schoolmates have forwarded this to native speakers( many of whom English teachers) and they can finish the test sooner than Chinese but not necessarily score higher.

I didn't take the whole test - I just skimmed it. As a native speaker who is familiar with the business environment in the US, I had no difficulty. I think not knowing the context would have made it quite hard. I'm not sure my native-speaking 12-year-old daughter, who has very good communication skills, would do well because she's not familiar with the nature of the content. Unless the students were business-oriented, I think even advanced learners of English would find difficulty here.

Even without being invited to take the test (I haven't even read it), I would like to point out the following:

The fact that some native speakers do not achieve good results in an English test does not, by any means, spoils or discredits it. Just consider for instance the extreme situation of an illiterate English native speaker. It is completely understandable and reasonable that an English test may aim at diagnosing a high level of English knowledge, even a higher one than some native speakers may present. Of course this analyses is valid for any other language besides English.
Maybe you know some Chinese native speakers who do not have a great domain of the Chinese language.

I tried to do this, but gave up because of the errors in it.

Here are some of the answers I got:

1A, 2B, 3C, 4B, 5C (weakly collocated), 6B, 7D, 8A, 9C, 10D,

11 probably C I don't know what "to econometric the analysis" means.

12A based on above guess

13A, 14A,

I gave up at this point seeing that it looks like the test is going from bad to worse with missing answers at 18 and 19

I did it and it took me about half an hour, but there are too many errors to make a realistic assessment of it.

I'm interested in the purpose behind all this.
I don't think any of the regular teachers here would be surprised if this exam has errors, wrong answers or multiple correct answers. We are used to posts of invalid "English tests" written by non-native speakers. It's normal.
