Hi,

suggest (that)… I suggest (that) we go out to eat.

I'd like to ask if we can use the progressive tense instead of the simple present without changing the meaning of the above sentence.

I am suggesting (that) we go out to eat.

I gather it is the same but cannot make sure of it.

You might hear the present continuous in certain dialogues.

John: You look like you might have put on a few pounds over Christmas!
Jane: Are you suggesting I look fat?
John: No, not at all. In fact, you look great!

You could say I am suggesting if you're clarifying a misunderstanding:

Liza: Do you mean you think we should move in together?
Allen: No, I'm just suggesting we go out to eat!
