Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

Her name stank in the nostrils of decent people. She was a gambler, a spendthrift and a wanton.

stink in somebody's nostrils = provoke an aversion to

Thanks for your efforts.

Regards,

V

Hey, Vil!

Your interpretation is correct. However, 'stank in the nostrils' is not common usage in the US. ;-)
