Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could give me the right (British) idiom for this situation. In a slightly formal and awkward situation you drop a clanger in a way that you wish you could vanish in a sec! In Persian we have "I wish the earth had broken off and gulped me in!".

Can "I wanted to curl up and die!" be used in this case?

Many thanks in advance.

"I wished the ground would open up and swallow me".

It certainly can. It's another way of saying you were so embarrassed that even death would be preferable to being perceived as a fool.

Thanks a lot. I've got what I needed to know. However, I'm more curious about something else now! ;-) Is it necessary to curl up before getting to die? :) What does "curl up" mean in this context? Thanks in advance.

Not exactly certain, but I think it's a kind of reference to how leaves curl up before they die, if you forget to water a plant.
