When reporting somebody's directions should I use the present or the past tense of the verbs in bold? Are there any mistakes in the extract?
He told me the way and I listened carefully to him. He explained that I had to carry on along the road towards Portsmouth, until I get down/got down a steep hill, then to take the turning to the left at the bottom of the hill...
