[Vocabulary] pitch

Hi,

What does the "pitch" mean in this sentence? Does it mean the place where the players play soccer?

He's been fantastic and has brought a lot to the club on and off the pitch.

Yes, the green rectangle is called the "football pitch". There are different names for the areas where different sports are played.

Football pitch
Tennis court
Netball court
Rugby pitch
Fencing piste
Baseball diamond
Golf course
Hockey pitch

. . . Cricket field
Boxing ring (although it's square)

Ice hockey rink

Basketball court is another.

Note that Americans use "field" instead of "pitch." Soccer field, football field. Baseball is played in a park.

And of course your 'hockey' is our 'ice hockey', which makes a difference to where we play. What do you call our 'hockey' (played on grass)?

ps. 'soccer' is what our former colonists call the game we kmow as 'football'. Their 'football' is our 'American football'.

"Field hockey." But it's a girls-only sport.

(There have been cases where boys have played on the girls team including wearing the skirt-uniform, but that is an abnormality.)

That's interesting. Why would they do that?

It's also interesting that men don't play field hockey in America. I've just read on Wikipedia:

The men's team isn't as widely known within the country as the women's team.

I don't think I know of another sport whose women's version is more popular with the public than men's one, even in just one country. Certainly, men's (field) hockey is more popular here.

Why would boys play on a girls team? Who knows? They say it's cause they love the sport. Realize that in America "gender equity" is a big thing. Girls have the right to play on "boys" teams if they so choose. So it's only fair that a boy can play on a girls team.

Hmm, perhaps. But men's beach volleyball is quite popular with young women here. I was at a couple of events with both sexes playing matches and the audiences seemed to be more or less equally large.
