hope this shows that I was able to do the exercise..but i wanted answers for no.5 and 6...can anyone tell me those...my students think that 5 answer should be subject of verb and 6 answer should be obj of verb....plz if anyone could help

(1) I understand how you feel. Here in the United States, some
teachers are expected to teach subjects outside of their fields.
For example, a physical education teacher may be told to teach
history. So s/he reads the book the night before class!!!
(2) I think that you have done a great job. May I just suggest a
few changes regarding #5 and #6?
(3) I think that it might be helpful to parse (analyze) No. 5 this way:
What happened at the party + surprised + everyone.
(a) "What happened at the party" = a noun clause that is the subject.
(Your students are correct: It is the subject of the
sentence.)
(i ) at the party = prepositional phrase that modifies (belongs to) "happened." Where did it happen? At the party.
(b) surprised = verb.
(c) everyone = object.
(In case you have some super intelligent students who ask you this
question, please remember that "what" in your sentence really
means "that which." In other words:
That (which happened at the party)
+ surprised everyone. Hopefully,
none of your students will ask you to explain "what"!!!)
(4) You did a nice job with No. 6, but may I most respectfully suggest
a few changes?
His first thought
that the noise was a gun shot was wrong.
(Your students are confused. They think that "thought" is the past
tense of "think." Explain to them that "thought" in this sentence is a
noun. Something like "idea.")
(a) As you can see, the sentence is basically:
His first thought + was + wrong.
Of course, people will ask you: What thought?
Then you use a noun clause to explain. So we say that "that the noise
was a gun shot" is a noun clause IN APPOSITION with the noun "thought."
