Iam a little confused with this exercise can u help me as my students have a number of doubts..Iam esp confused with the no.5,6..whether the noun clause function is object of preposition or subj of verb..help!!!!

Underline the noun clauses. State the function of each noun clause.
  1. Your health depends on how you take care of it.
  2. Give him what he wants.
  3. Knowing she likes fashion, I sent her an invitation to the fashion show.
  4. Nobody will agree with what you suggest.
  5. What happened at the party surprised everyone.
  6. His first thought that the noise was a gun shot was wrong.
  7. He asked me why i was sad.
  8. The question is whether we should build a house now.
  9. Believing that he would not deceive me i told him the secret.
  10. whoever makes a noise will be turned out.

Hi.
Teachers and experts may be reluctant to reply to your post because you haven't provided your own answers, which might show you haven't even had a try yourself.

As for noun clauses, there are some other functions that you haven't listed. Try googling 'noun clauses' and you'll get quite a few articles dealing with the matter. Personally, I like this one:
Noun Clauses
I'm sure you'll find the answer to #5 and #6 after reading it.

P.S. Please note what your 'esp' has turned into after you shortened the word.

I hope these examples help you decide about the function of noun clauses. :)

Subject:
What he said is not true.
How far he went is not known.

Direct object:
I don´t know what he said.
She asked me who the man was.

Indirect object:
Tell whoever is knocking at the door to stop doing it.

Object to a preposition:
It depends on how far he had gone.

Subjective complement:
He became what he was expected to be.
The worst is that he never answer our letters.

Objective complement:
They made him what he is.

In apposition to a non:
The suggestion that we should work harder was good.
The idea that he was going to kill the man horrified me.

Adjective complement:
I am happy that you could come.
I am aware that he has done it.

***** A NON-TEACHER's COMMENT *****

(1) I understand how you feel. Here in the United States, some

teachers are expected to teach subjects outside of their fields.

For example, a physical education teacher may be told to teach

history. So s/he reads the book the night before class!!!

(2) I think that you have done a great job. May I just suggest a

few changes regarding #5 and #6?

(3) I think that it might be helpful to parse (analyze) No. 5 this way:

What happened at the party + surprised + everyone.

(a) "What happened at the party" = a noun clause that is the subject.

(Your students are correct: It is the subject of the sentence.)

(i ) at the party = prepositional phrase that modifies (belongs to) "happened." Where did it happen? At the party.

(b) surprised = verb.

(c) everyone = object.

(In case you have some super intelligent students who ask you this

question, please remember that "what" in your sentence really

means "that which." In other words:

That (which happened at the party) + surprised everyone. Hopefully,

none of your students will ask you to explain "what"!!!)

(4) You did a nice job with No. 6, but may I most respectfully suggest

a few changes?

His first thought that the noise was a gun shot was wrong.

(Your students are confused. They think that "thought" is the past

tense of "think." Explain to them that "thought" in this sentence is a

noun. Something like "idea.")

(a) As you can see, the sentence is basically:

His first thought + was + wrong.

Of course, people will ask you: What thought?

Then you use a noun clause to explain. So we say that "that the noise

was a gun shot" is a noun clause IN APPOSITION with the noun "thought."

(5) Whenever you have a question, just ask it here. The great

teachers and enthusiastic non-teachers are waiting to answer you.

(If you post just one question at a time, you may get a faster reply.)

Respectfully yours,

James
