You "take" a new unit when you enrol in it.
You "study" a new unit when you learn it.
This assumes that "unit" is some academic subject. Your post gives no context, so it's not clear what a unit is. "Unit" doesn't have that meaning where I come from.

Hi,

Please note I' not a teacher nor a native speaker.

I assume that the unit means a module.

We studied a new unit.
We took a new unit.

I think both are correct. The second sentence is more colloquial.
Don't see much of a difference without a wider context.
The only assumption I would have made when someone said the second sentence would be that you haven't finished the unit.

Cheers,

By unit I mean module or serials of small lessons in a book.
Thanks.
