Except "install" software, are there any words or phrases I can use?

My teacher (Chinese who teachs English) told me "set up", I looked it up but I thought it might not work, may I have your opinion?

As a NES, but not a teacher, I would always install software, but the file I would use to perform the installation is invariably called "setup.exe" or variants of "setup.exe" including the software's name.

I think set up is ok. Many people use that phrasal verb. My brother is a programmer he said it is ok to use. much more interesting that the verb install

This is incorrect - "install" changes operation system cofiguration and register in it (for ex., in MS Windows registry) components and processes usually running some executable wizard. The installed software then appears in Window's GUI - Start-->Porgrams. Nothing of this is possible, for example, on shared web hosting where software is deployed (i.e. files are just copied in order to be run).

There are no absolute synonyms but related terms are: setup, deploy, initialize, build in, embed, activate, register, sign up

Maybe I need to rephrase my previous comment

As a NES, but neither a teacher nor a web hosting specialist (which I presume from your query you also are not) I would expect to have to install almost all software, these days, on my own stand-alone PC.

If, however, I were a web hosting specialist, or an IT specialist with responsibility for a company's main program server, I presumably may have to install it on the web hosting facility/server prior to being able to deploy it to others.

I trust this covers vgv8's points.

I am just curious - the non-IT (or non-web hosting) specialists never launch software by double-clicking the exectubles (runnables), for example, files with extension .exe without installing them on their PC?

Microsoft, along with many others, talk about installing software, so to say it is incorrect is not a reflection of the ordinary usage of the term install software. Specialists may use terms differently but the ordinary user installs software.
