cast vs gibbs

In Korea, we call "plaster cast" "gibbs", whose spelling I don't know. We just say "gibs". Is it German? I have no idea where it comes from. Maybe a cast manufacturer's name?

74)W: I stopped my car at a red light but suddently a car crashed into me from behind.
M :How long do you have to wear that cast? It must be very uncomfortable...

Apparently gips is one of the German words for 'plaster' (Click here).

Please note I'm not a teacher nor a native speaker;

Apparently gips is one of the German words for 'plaster' (Click here).

It's also Polish word (Click here) for plaster but if and only if the plaster is made by adding water to gypsum. I wouldn't say it come to Korean language from German especially if you consider the etymology of the word gypsum : [...] perhaps of Semitic origin (cf. Arabic jibs, [...]
