Hi there,
I'd really appreciate it if you could kindly help me get the exact meaning of this sentence.

"Modern societies have a covert emotional history, yet to be fully drawn into the open."

1. Does "emotional" here mean something exciting?
2. Does the meaning of "emotional" change if we replace it with "covert"?

Thanks a lot in advance.

1. No. "Emotional history" probably means history of emotions.
2. I don't understand. If we replace "emotional" with "covert", we'll get:

"Modern societies have a covert covert history, yet to be fully drawn into the open."

It doesn't make sense.

I meant replace them with each other:

"...an emotional covert history..."

I see. I would find this difficult to interpret. Maybe others can come up with a context in which it would make sense.

Hello

This is a very subjective question and you have not provided context. Hence, very difficult to answer your questions.

Cheers

I wouldn't- it changes the meaning, Your version means that they have a hidden history that raises emotions, like a dark chapter in their past that people feel strongly about IMO.
