Hi guys!

What's the correct version: "What is your friend NAMED / CALLED? I can't remember!"?

Thanks!

Usually, "What is your friend's name?"

I'm so sorry... but you haven't answered my question:oops:! There's only one possibility in the sentence given, but I am having trouble in finding out the right answer. Here's one more example: Mary was named after her grandmother. NOT called
Am I being clear? Thanks a lot!

"Mary was named after her grandmother" would be the most natural.

No, in the first case there are two possible answers (What is your friend NAMED / CALLED? I can't remember!).
What is your friend named - Sally
What is your friend called - Sally

In the second case, there is only one answer (of the given example) - Mary was named after her grandmother.

You keep getting answers and you keep rejecting them. What is it that you want?

If I am asking the name of a friend, I would use Mike's suggestion, "What is your friend's name?.

"What is your friend called?" is possible, but I find "What is your friend named?" unnatural.

I found the following sentence in the dictionary: "We named our daughter Sarah."... so if this sentence is fine, why can't we ask "What did you name your daughter?" or "What is your daughter named?" (besides the typical question "What's your daughter's name?")?

This is an FCE exercise... We should understand how to use whether "call"(v.) or "name"(v.)... I'm sorry but I have no more context... I know these verbs can sometimes be used interchangeably, but there are obviously exceptions, and I'd like to clearly understand those cases.

Thank you!

The two I have underlined are fine. They refer to the initial giving of the name. The one I have put in bold is not natural.
