I do really want to understand why some options are possible, and others aren't... I was taught that just getting the answer is not enough.. ;-) THANKS!

The quality of the answer is usually determined by the quality of the question.

If I am asking the name of a friend, I would use Mike's suggestion, "What is your friend's name?.

"What is your friend called?" is possible, but I find "What is your friend named?" unnatural.
