[Grammar] Past perfect, an action happened after a past event?

The young man did not wake up until the bed had struck the ground.

This sentence is quoted from New Concept English Book 2. I would personally find it difficult to accept that it is wrong. But, isn't the past perfect tense used to refer to the earlier one of two past actions?

Yes, the young man woke up after the bed had hit the ground.
