In many ways (I say this from experience as a teacher and a parent of a student) the English education system is far superior to that in France. I'll say no more because this is not the place to do so.

As someone who has experienced products of the French system, and who taught for 25 years in the English system, I am not sure that I would agree with you. However, as you say, this is not the place to discuss it. :-(

This morning I read W.B. Yeat's comment about "the Britisher's jealousy of arts and artists."

Did the famous Irish poet realize that the term might offend people in England?

(I have read that -- many years ago -- there was some unpleasantness between the English and the Irish.)

I have just read this in the May 24, 2012, issue of the London Review of Books:

"He's [an author] modest, aware that a modern Brit [my emphasis] cannot easily grasp what it means to live among

changeable frontiers, ..." [He had written a book about the history of East Prussia.]
