[Idiom] What is the relevance of give out and prize

It's like the Nobel Prize for math, except they only give it out once every four years. It's a great thing.

Why don't they just use "give it" instead of "give it out"?
It makes me confuse like hand out..

"Give out" is one of many separable phrasal verbs (verb + preposition) which can be, but not necessarily, separated usually with a pronoun.

'Give out' and 'hand out' have the idea of 'distribute. They would not be appropriate if only one prize were awarded. You could omit 'out' in your sentence.

First, the concept of phrasal verbs and separability does not mean, using your example, dropping the preposition ("out"). It means, using a pronoun between the verb and preposition or not using the pronoun. For example, you could say "give out the award" or "give it out". Other examples, "The military blew up the bridge." "They blew it up on Thursday." "Don't forget to pay us back the money we lent you." "Don't forget to pay back the money we lent you."
