[Grammar] "ON the island" VS "IN the island"

Why in the sentence "They live in the little island near France." is used preposition IN, but in the sentences " No cars are allowed on the island." or "There're no wild animals on the island" is used preposition ON?

It should be "on."

I must make a note of today's date. This is the first time for a very long time that I have had only one hit for something on Google. That sentence, as far as the internet is cncerned, exists only here, at usingenglish.com.
