Meet vs. Meet up

Hi,

I can't tell the difference between 'meet' and 'meet up'. Can anyone explain the difference?

At first I thought one person 'meets' another but we 'meet up,' but I've seen 'meet up' used in former too, as in "I'll meet you up at 5, all right?"

The only difference I know of is the degree of formality. Meet up is (more) informal.

Generally in BrE we say, for example, "Let's meet for a drink tomorrow evening", whereas, in AmE (I think), "meet up" is used. They both mean the same.
