    'a thing' in the first example refers to anything at all. It's not specific. Since you have eaten nothing, anything qualifies as 'a thing'.

    In the second example, there is a specific thing that you are referring to - "the thing that annoys you" or "you/me".

    You can plug anything into "a thing". But you can only plug the defined thing into "one thing".
