    Subject and verbs

    Hello,
I am confused on what the subject and verb would be in these sentences. Can you let me know if I am right and if not what it should be.

The composition of these groups varies in age and gender. Subject is groups and verb is Varies.

Sometimes a proud male will beat his chest. Subject is male and verb will beat

Chimp tools, such as leaf sponges and sticks, are primitive. Subject is chimp tools verb is are

    Thank you for you help.

Sorry, but I think there was an error above. The subject is composition, not groups.

In the other, the subject is habitat, not chimps.

    I agree.

Also note the subject-verb agreement, "composition...varies".
If "groups" were the subject, it would be 'groups...vary'.

The situation in sfischpera's second post is very clear. Forests can be habitats; forests can't be chimpanzees.

Yes, except for #1: subject is 'composition'.
