Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my attempt paraphrasing the following sentences?
1.1. So much dust had accumulated during our absence that it took us some time to make the place spick and span.
1.2. So much dust and gathered during our absence that it took us some time to make the place spick and span.
spick and span = immaculately clean; spotless
2.1. Iím dubious about entrusting the job to him, for he is neither shrewd nor discreet.
2.2. I have some doubt about trusting him with the job, for he is neither wise nor careful.
Be careful - there are two words: discreet [able to keep things to oneself] and discrete [ unique ]
3.1. After the chilly reception we received I did not feel like visiting them again.
3.2. After the cold reception we received I did not feel like visiting them again.
though I would use "cool" rather than "cold" as synonym in this case.
4.1. I must admit that he is one of the stingiest people I have come across.
4.2. I must admit that he is one of the meanest people I have come across.
5.1. I chose at random, but my choice proved correct.
5.2. I chose without thinking, but my choice proved correct.
Thank you for your efforts.
