    This thing is far from over,

    In these sentences "over" means "finished".

    Let's get this thing over with. = Let's finally finish this thing.

    The expression "to get something over with" means "to finally finish something".


    This thing is far from over. = This thing is far from finished.

    to be over - to be finished

    Just to add: The task in "let's get this over with" is something that the speaker considers to be unpleasant.
