being the same & eating enough

    Dear Teachers,

I read this from The School of Essential Ingredients by Erica Bauermeister:

"So -- what is the essence of Thanksgiving?"
"It's about coming together," said Helen warmly. "All these different people, with all their different lives, being a family."
"Or at my house," Chloe spoke up, "it's about everyone being the same, and if you're not, eating enough so you won't notice."

I don't quite understand what Chloe meant by saying "Thanksgiving is about everyone being the same" and "if you're not (the same as other people?), eating enough so you won't notice"...

Chloe does not enjoy Thanksgiving. She doesn't fit in with her family. She feels she is being forced to be like them, to conform (to be the same). However, she can avoid thinking this way by eating a lot of good food, and ignoring family differences.
