    verb + to

teaching is learning, and i learn a lot on this website - thank´s to all. so, here is another (for me) perplexing question:

when can and cannot we use "to" after a verb?

it appears to me that simply some verbs take "to" and others not, e.g. I work to ... they want to... she needs to... he tries to... But, the following verbs cannot take "to": finish, postpone, consider, avoid, imagine, risk, etc. However we can use these verbs prior to another progressive-form verb: avoid making... risk asking...

any rule here aside from my idea that some verbs take "to" and some do not?

    thank you.

Well, basically, you're exactly right. Some verbs can be followed by "to" and some can't. It's often just a case of learning which are which!

Just another note - "thanks" doesn't have an apostrophe. It's a plural.
