I had a beer or three?

    Dear all,

I happedned to see a strange phrase as below.

"...I had a beer or three...."

It makes sense to me if it's "a beer or two", but why three?

I tried googling this "a beer or three", and "a beer or four, five six ....ten" just out of curiosity.

Then, there is a lot of hits of not ony "three", but also all the numbers from three to ten.

What exactly do these mean? Is this a kind of joke? If so, why is it funny?

Or am I missing something important?

    I really need your help....

    Thank you

    OP

    [1] He had a beer or two. <in moderation>
[2] He had a beer or three. <more than he should have had>

Yes, it's a kind of joke. It is meant to suggest that you had rather a lot to drink.
