    Charley promised willingly, for he was concerned, for Luce's sake, about what people would say should they know of what had occured.

    Is it:

    They should know of what had occured?

    It means, if they found out/discovered what had occurred.

    Yes, except that 'if' requires the subjunctive, while 'should' is inherently subjunctive.
