    war-lord/ at a loss/ shrank from fear

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I’m right with my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

Salman Raduyev was one of the most wanted Chechen war-lords.

war-lord = a military commander, especially an aggressive regional commander with individual autonomy; supreme military leader exercising civil power in a region especially one accountable to nobody when the central government is weak

They had wandered a long way; and when they looked to see which way they should go home, they found themselves at a loss to know what path to take.

at a loss = puzzled, perplexed, in a state of uncertainty

Then he shrank for fear, turned pale, and trembled.

shrank for fear = in my opinion it have to be “shrunk from fear”

shrink (v) = to draw back instinctively, as from something alarming; recoil.

    Thank you for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V.

    All your intepretations are correct.

It has to be "shrank" to maintain the tenses in the sentence.

Yes, you are right Salman Raduyev was the chechen separatist war-lord considered to be the most radical and notorious rebel who was arresred by Russian army and died under misterious cercumstaces.

They had wandered a long way; and when they looked to see which way they should go home, they found themselves at a loss to know what path to take.

at a loss = puzzled, perplexed, in a state of uncertainty. absolutely correct.

Then he shrank for fear, turned pale, and trembled.

shrank for fear = in my opinion it have to be “shrunk from fear” It should be from or in as:The dog shrank back in fear.

shrink (v) = to draw back instinctively, as from something alarming; recoil. to reduce in size or contract
